The role of the SENCo

The SENCo is responsible for:

-       the day-to-day operation and implementation of Nurtured Nursery’s SEN policy and for coordinating provision across the setting

-       supporting individual practitioners in implementing strategies, training and outstanding practice for individual children and groups of children, by drawing on a range of sources of support available

-       forming close links with external agencies and professionals to offer the best support possible for the child and their family

-       involving parents in the discussion of any early concerns in identifying any Special Educational Needs (SEN) and agreeing:

o   The outcomes being sought for the child

o   The interventions and support to be put in place

o   The expected impact on progress, development and behaviour

o   Date for review

-       Making sure parents receive information, advice and support that they need in order to participate in any decision-making processes

-       Ensuring parents are closely involved throughout and that their insights inform action taken by the setting

-       Understanding how funding can support the setting in meeting the child’s SEN and disability through additional training, resources and enhancing ratios where necessary

-       Implementing a Development Plan for the setting, which is regularly reviewed for continual professional development for all staff and continuing to improve practice for the ever-changing needs of the children attending

Admissions

If you choose to send your child to Nurtured Nursery, the following steps will be taken to ensure a smooth, well organised and supportive start for your child and your family:

-       You will be invited for a meeting with the SENCo to discuss which sessions are best for your child, according to our availability and staffing

-       Settling in sessions would be booked for these sessions, to ensure your child becomes familiar with the same staff and children for each session

-       A meeting will be booked with the SENCo to go through the external agencies already involved with your child, collate their most recent reports and create an Individual Learning Plan (ILP). We would also put in place a risk assessment and Care Plan if necessary

-       We would then make contact with the external agencies already involved, informing them of your child’s place with us and invite them in for a visit if appropriate.
